Various: Een vrolic wesen
Composers: Agricola, Barbireau, Isaac, Obrecht, et al., edited by Richard Taruskin
Title: Een vrolic wesen
Publisher number: OSRS2
Publisher: Ogni Sorte
Instrumentation: SATB instruments in 2-4 parts, various combinations
Ogni Sorte's Renaissance Standards series, first published in 1979, aimed to gather in one volume all the related settings of some of the most popular tunes of the 16th century. This volume includes 14 settings in 2-4 parts by Agricola, Barbireau, Bucis, Ghiselin, Isaac, Obrecht, Pipelare, and several anonymous settings. The score is in modern notation, but as the editor writes, "The most conspicuously novel feature of our editions...is the inclusion of parts in original notation." (NB: parts are not facsimiles, but diplomatic parts in original notation, clear and easy to read with obvious errors corrected and rehearsal letters added). A very fine introduction to reading white mensural notation is included.
